Employee Evaluation

After the training, your employer (or future employer) should evaluate your driving ability on the employer’s forklift. The employer is in essence certifying that the employer has provided the training outlined by OSHA.

Training on any piece of heavy machinery or construction equipment benefits both the company and the employee. From the perspective of the employee, being trained in the use of a machine will allow them to feel more comfortable using it and be far more efficient than if they were assigned to it with no training. From the perspective of the business, this training will provide the security of knowing that employees who operate equipment are knowledgeable in its use and certified to do so.

One of the most often-used pieces of equipment in any construction-industry business is the forklift. In order to protect themselves from liability and their workers from harm, many businesses choose to send employees to a course. These are typically offered by the manufacturers of the lifting equipment themselves, and are between one and two days long.

This course will include information about safety, operation and fueling of the forklift, and will also feature a written response and actual operations test. Upon successful completion, the qualified operator will receive a certificate showing they have passed the program, and this certificate is typically valid for two to three years.

By making sure that employees are well-trained in using any equipment found at the business, the business owner can avoid the potential litigation which could follow if an untrained or reckless employee were to use lifting equipment and cause injury or damage. If you have a forklift on your premises, you will need to consider the following points. If you truly answer any of them with “no”, you will want to consider the issue for the safety of your drivers and anyone entering the zone of travel.

1) Forklift operating area separated from pedestrians

2) Pedestrian access to work areas restricted by barriers

3) Pedestrian walkways clearly marked and provided

4) Unit in operation signs

5) Mirrors for drivers and pedestrians provided at all blind spots

6) Changes to workplace daily schedule communicated to ALL affected employees for use

7) Tires suitable for use on all operating surfaces at this workplace

Seatbelt fitted to the unit and used

9) Seat is in good shape

10)Unit is on a regular maintenance schedule

11) Unit is inspected and is certified each year

12) Unit is an appropriate size for the tasks

13)Unit has a readable load chart

14) Operators understand the load chart

15) Load chart indicate the safe capacity for different attachments and is rated for each

16) Unit fitted with correctly operating warning devices (horn works, turn signal and brake and reverse lights work, reversing beeper)

17) Unit has a correctly operating speed control device fitted

18) Overhead cage is fitted on the forklift

19) Operators hold an appropriate certificate for operation

20) Uncertified  operators are directly supervised in sight of an authorized person

21) Operators observe speed limits and warning signs

22) Operators receive appropriate training and instruction on all models of forklifts in operation and on workplace hazards and safe work procedures

23) Operators understand the requirement to report any equipment damage and forklift incidents

24) Use a pre-test checklist at the beginning of each shift

If you have answered “yes” to these points, congratulations on a fine job on forklift safety. If you did answer “no” to a few, just make adjustments and introduce the policies to your employees and make sure if you do have visitors on the floor, to make sure everyone knows of the safety policies.
